Article details

Sturgis to Deadwood is about 14 miles. Off-season that is a short Black Hills hop, often around 20 minutes. During the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally it is a parade. People search the phrase because they booked a hotel in one town and a concert in the other, or because Deadwood is the closest nightlife that is not Lazelle Street.

The 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is August 7 to August 16, 2026. South Dakota DOT drops the I-90 speed limit for rally week and runs extra signals. Plan the 14 miles as more than 14 miles.

The ride itself

Highway 14A / the Spearfish Canyon and Boulder Canyon approaches get used, but the common rally hop is the short run between Sturgis and historic Deadwood: casinos, brick Main Street, more hotel rooms than Sturgis proper. Travel South Dakota lists Deadwood at 14 miles, Spearfish about 20, Rapid City 29. Those numbers are door-to-downtown in clean traffic, not Saturday night of bike week.

“How far is Sturgis from Deadwood” is the same question in the other direction. Same 14 miles. Deadwood to Sturgis in the morning to see Main Street, back at night for a room, is a normal rally pattern because Sturgis itself has little hotel inventory.

What changes in August

I-90 between Rapid City and Sturgis is the freight route for bikes, RVs, and chase trucks. DOT has cut that stretch from 75 mph to 65 for rally week in 2026, from around Deadwood Avenue in Rapid City toward Lazelle in Sturgis. Local roads into Deadwood clog when a concert lets out. A disk lock still matters in both towns.

This is not a mountain pass epic. If you want scenery, Spearfish Canyon and the ride toward Mount Rushmore are longer days. Sturgis to Deadwood is logistics: bed, beer, back to the rally.

If you are shopping a bike while you are here

Rally lots and sidewalk vendors are a bad place to finish a title transfer in the dark. If the trip is also a purchase, inspect in daylight in Rapid City or Spearfish, then ride the 14 miles for fun, not as the test loop for a bike you just met.

Key takeaways

  • Sturgis to Deadwood: about 14 miles, roughly 20 minutes in normal traffic
  • 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally: August 7 to 16, 2026
  • Deadwood is nightlife and lodging overflow, not a second Main Street Sturgis
